Oh yeah, it's a synonym for Democracy.

Like ol' Ben Franklin said, "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch."

"Liberty", he said, "is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote."

"My question without a good answer is … if 80% want it if it is done right, why can’t we do it right and get it done?"

Actually, the answer is pretty simple, Its because of the 10% who don't want it no matter what. For some reason, the minority view towards anything in this country RULES. Can't offend or upset anyone you know. Thats how I see it.

You're putting a lot of thought into this Jeremy. I like that.

I myself have tried to recruit many individuals to run for office. Most have declined. Those that have agreed, have done so because of one of the already listed reasons. So I'm not going to add this to the list.

I consider recruitment part of the process, but not a reason to run.

We had a recent election where the folks ran as a "slate". Also, school boards tend to recruit like minded folks from the PTA or local teachers union.

So would another worthwhile category be, "recruited to run"?

Would, "Tired of the way things have been going" fit under "Ego" or "Civic Minded"? ;)

Every time I think about this, I'm reminded of your quote from Jerry Garcia. "Someone's gotta do something, and it's really pathetic is has to be us!"

Doesn't it seem like most parts of government are based on misplaced priorities?

The one that really gets me: Public education isn't about educating kids; it's about employing adults. How dare we measure student growth in a year or hold teachers accountable for results. No, any discussion of these things are an attack on teachers.

Not only are the priorities out of alignment, but the incentives aren't aligned with the goals. If you get rewarded no matter the outcome, if all you need to do is punish a few more people to meet your operating budget for the year - then you have a dysfunctional government unit.
